A legacy is a gift from a predecessor or the past. This award holds special meaning to the Emig Family, as it is put in place to honor and remember the late Bill Emig. It is his love of racing and people in general that has now laid the foundation that is now in place at Mercer Raceway Park. Small things such as our signature family pass, which makes the sport we love affordable to all and the largest number of unsanctioned race events in the region geared to the local drivers are elements he would have insisted upon if he was still here today.
Now, in turn, exceptional moments considered gifts that take place at Mercer Raceway Park and become part of the speedway’s history are now honored with the legacy award
To know that Bob Felmlee won his 100th and final sprint car race at Mercer Raceway Park, that the speedway was part of Jimmy Hawley’s 1999 tri-track championship season, and that Lou Blaney put Billy Decker in his place on a heart-stopping next-to-last lap pass are all moments that legacies are built upon.
Everything happens in its time and place and as we all know 2001 marked the 50th anniversary of Mercer Raceway Park. It only seems fitting that the son of the speedway’s all-time winningest driver, Ralph Quarterson, would rightfully so win his first Mercer crown in conjunction with this once in a lifetime celebration. Don’t you agree everything happens in its time and place? Tom Quarterson you are a true example of the meaning of the Legacy Award.
