Hawley Wins Second in Sprints;
Hall Takes First in Mercer Mods

by Mike Leone

May 1, 1999

Mercer (PA)...Highlighting the third night of racing at Mercer Raceway Park
on Saturday evening were wins by Jimmy Hawley in Waste Management Sprints Cars and Rick Hall in MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds. Other winners were Randy Ferguson in the Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds, Gary Smoker in the Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds, and Brian Miller in the Pure Stocks.

Jimmy Hawley picked up win number two by taking the 20-lap Waste Management Sprint Car Feature. Hawley’s winning move came on lap 13 taking the lead from Gary Edwards. The win marked the West Middlesex, Pa. driver’s third overall win of the season and seventh since Mercer reopened in 1994.

Standing in victory lane with his son, Hawley commented on the difference from the last year to this year. "We’re not hurting for horsepower. The way we have the car set up this year compared to last year, there’s no comparison in the way the car feels." This could be trouble for the rest of the western Pa. considering Hawley had 16 wins in 1998.

Hawley’s run to the front began from the 11th position. Hawley worked his way into the top five taking both Ohio drivers, John Nervo and Eric Hysong, on lap seven. Seconds later, Nervo spun bringing out the caution. On the restart, six-starter Tommy Burns, Jr., drove by Arnie Kent for second and began to set his sights on pole-sitter Gary Edwards. One lap later, Hawley moved into third with a pass of Kent.

Tom Quarterson became the first Sprint flip victim of 1999. Quarterson toppled the John Sloss #00, while running in the top ten. He was okay, but through for the night. When racing resumed, Burns was pressuring Edwards for the lead when he slipped off the backstretch on lap 11 allowing Hawley to drive under for runner-up.

Hawley grabbed the lead coming of turn four on lap 13 performing a slide job. The rest was history as Hawley smoked them for the remaining laps in the Dr. John Crawford #cIII. Burns finally worked his way by Edwards on the backstretch on lap 16 for second. Bob Felmlee came from 10th to take third when he got Edwards on lap 19. Edwards held off Gary McCann, who recorded a career-best Mercer finish in fifth. Sixth through tenth were Jamie Smith, Hysong, Jason Jacoby, Mike Kekich, and Buddy Cochran. Heats went to Hawley and Felmlee.

Rick Hall won another wild and crazy 20-lap MercerPros.com DIRT Modified Feature holding off defending track champion Tommy Kristyak for the final 19 laps.

An eight-car melee occurred on lap two, then at another part on the race track, leader Dave Murdick and Steve Young tangled, sending both to the tail for the restart. This gave the lead to Bill Dorman, but as soon as action resumed, last week’s feature winner spun giving the lead to Hall and runner-up to Kristyak.

The two went at it for the remainder of the race at times running side-by-side, but Hall always had just enough power to fend off the challenges. Laps 16 and 17 saw Kristyak all over Hall. Two restarts with one-lap to go gave Kristyak every opportunity needed, but the night belonged to the Grove City, Pa driver who won his first of the year and sixth since 1994 in the Hall Safety Equipment #B4.

Point leader Carl Murdick had himself positioned for his third straight third place run, but broke on lap seven giving the spot to Lonny Riggs. Riggs stayed in the position right to the finish keeping Kristyak and Hall within striking distance for his best-career big-block finish in only his fifth start. Rob McClimans was fourth for the second-straight week, while Jeff Hoffman was fifth in a rare appearance. Sixth through tenth in the 25-car field were Young, Dorman, Jim Reagle, Dave Murdick, and Troy Schaffer. Hall and Randy Myers won the heats.

Randy Ferguson became the third different 20-lap Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified winner in as many nights. The Mercer, Pa. driver started fourth and gained the lead when Bill Adams, who led the race from laps two through ten and was looking for a career-first win, slowed on a lap 11 restart. Ferguson kept the 14 other competitors behind him and survived seven cautions for his second-career win in the #02. Kenny Hardy passed Harold Michaels for second on lap 19 dropping Michaels to third Lou Gentile was fourth as the Mercer Gardner’s Club was the recipient of this week’s money. Adams was fifth. Taking heats were Frank Guidace and Michaels.

With Andy Priest moving up to the DIRT Modifieds in Ted Hull’s #41 this year, Gary Smoker has easily become the driver to beat in the Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds. Smoker again proved it winning his second 15-lap feature at Mercer and third overall of the season. The Mercer, Pa. resident started 11th in the 24-car field and methodically raced to the front assuming the head spot on lap 11 passing race-long leader Jeremiah Shingledecker. Once in front, Smoker was not to be denied as the all-time Mercer Limited Modified winner cruised to his 14th career Mercer win driving the Kristyak’s Service Plaza #401. John Buchanan took second from Shingledecker on the next-to-last lap. On the final lap, Scott Kay and Skinny Hall both passed Shingledecker for third and fourth dropping
Shingledecker to fifth at the finish. Heat victors were Don McKnight and Hall.

After being out of the driver’s seat for a number of years, Brian Miller won his first Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stock Feature. Miller survived a wild 15-lap affair that featured five different leaders. Andy Buckley and Jim Davis battled for the lead in the first 10 laps. Bill Hanna, who started 10th, came up through and passed everyone including Davis for the lead on lap 12. Eleventh-starter, Gary Robinson, took second from Hanna, but on lap 14, Robinson and Davis tangled with both spinning and receiving flat tires. Hanna gained the lead back for the final restart, but again on lap 14 the leaders tangled; this time it was Hanna going around as Miller of New Wilmington came out on top for the win in the Terry Hoover #99B. Jim Brunson was a career-best second after starting 19th. Buckley was third ahead of Rick Anthony and Chuck Kerr. Dan Lewis, John Reiser, Buckley, and Leigh Wheeler were all victorious in the heats. Tim Mailliard and Brian Booher scored wins in the two B mains.

Rain wipes out action at
Mercer during the heats

by Mike Leone

May 8, 1999

Mercer (PA)...The remainder of the races had to be cancelled Saturday evening at Mercer Raceway Park after steady light rain put a halt to action. Seven heat races were run in light drizzle until the intensity of the rain picked up. There were a season-high 130 cars in the pit area. Rain checks will be good for the next two weeks. The Twin-State Auto Racing Club Night has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 22. Earlier in the week, 27 tri-axel loads of clay were put onto the track and the result Saturday was a smooth and tacky surface.

Car counts were 37 Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stocks, 27 Waste Management Sprint Cars, 26 MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds, 25 Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds, and 15 Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds. Randy Ferguson and Lou Gentile won the two Six-Cylinder heats. DIRT Modified heats went to Tommy Kristyak, Rick Hall, and Lou Blaney. Sprint heats were won by Gary McCann, Eric Hysong, and the third heat was rained out.

First wins for Smith
and Young at Mercer

by Mike Leone

May 15, 1999

Mercer(PA)
...Highlighting wins on Saturday evening at Mercer Raceway Park were Jamie Smith (Waste Management Sprint Cars) and Steve Young (MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds). Other winners were Gregg McCandless (Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds), Rick Hall (Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds), and Gary Robinson (Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stocks). A season-high 138 cars were on hand to do battle.

Jamie Smith looked like the “Jamie Smith” from years past as the Sewickley, Pa. driver won his first 20-lap Waste Management Sprint Car Feature since August 26 of last season. Referring to the switch to Maxim chassis, Smith related, “It’s the best night we have had so far. We really hit on something pretty good tonight. I learned it takes a little different driving technique to drive these.”

Smith’s run to the front began from the fifth spot. On lap four, Smith cracked the top three with a pass of Gary Edwards. Two laps later, Smith disposed of Gary McCann for runner-up. The following laps saw the 1996 and 1997 track champion close on leader Arnie Kent. By lap eight, Smith was all over Kent as the two raced traffic. On lap nine, Kent had trouble with a slower car and Smith raced by coming off the inside portion of turn two for the lead.

Two-time winner, Jimmy Hawley, who started ninth, made his way up to third taking McCann on ap 15. McCann’s fine run came to an end as he slowed on lap 16 moving Troy Preston into fourth. As the laps began to wind down, Kent and Hawley closed on Smith in heavy traffic as the top three distanced themselves from the field. On the final lap, Smith made the right moves through traffic for his 17th win since 1994 in his GBG/Butterfield’s Pub #5. Kent held off Hawley tying a career-best Sprint Car finish. Preston was fourth over Mike Kekich. Sixth through tenth were Bob Felmlee, Jack Sodeman, Jr., Tommy Burns, Jr., Randy Johnson, and Gary Kriess, Jr. Heats for the 24-car field went to Smith and Joe McEwen. Tom Quarterson and Jason Jacoby both flipped in separate incidents during hot laps. Both cars were done for the night, but both drivers were okay.

“I can’t believe I held off (Tommy) Kristyak! That’s a real thrill!” Those were the words out of Steve Young’s mouth crawling out of his #67 DIRT Modified in victory lane. Young held off a excellent field of 27 cars for his second career DIRT Modified win.

Young started from the outside pole in the 20-lap MercerPros.com feature and assumed the lead on lap one when he and Randy Myers made contact sending Myers spinning. Meanwhile, eighth-starter, Tommy Kristyak picked his way to the front and passed Carl Murdick for the third position on lap two. Rich Ferguson looked good early on holding off all of the top cars in second for six laps, but the on seventh circuit lost the spot to Kristyak.

Following the restart for a Rodney Beltz spin with eight laps completed, Carl Murdick got an excellent start passing the lap car of Ed Alcorn as well as Ferguson and Kristyak to take runner-up. But on the 11th go-around, Kristyak reestablished second dropping Murdick back to third. Young stretched out his lead to a straightaway with five laps to go. Two cautions bunched up the field for a two-lap shoot-out, but on this night the Grove City, Pa. driver had them all covered racing to victory by about a five car-length margin over Kristyak, the defending track champion. Young became the fourth winner in four races this season.

Carl Murdick was third for the third time out of four races this season. Andy Priest was fourth after starting 11th in his first start of the season. Tim Doran was fifth also making his first start of the season. Sixth through tenth were Lou Blaney, Bill Dorman, Randy Myers, Jerry Bickel, and Skip Deane.
Heat winners were Blaney, Kristyak, and Doran.

Gregg McCandless ended a long streak of bad luck scoring the 20-lap Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified win. The Mercer, Pa. driver started on the outside pole and quickly assumed the lead from Steve Barr. McCandless quickly distanced himself from the field and never looked back driving the McCandless Ford #20 to his first win since June 28, 1997 when he won back-to-back weeks. Jim Bickel, who started 5th, had his best run in years, but had a tire go down while running second on lap 10. This moved Randy Ferguson, who started ninth, into second and he kept the spot over Frank Guidace. Lou Gentile and Harold Michaels completed the top five. The race went non-stop in six minutes and 14 seconds. Winning the heats were Gentile and Guidace.

Rick Hall won his second race of the season, but first in the 15-lap Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modified Feature. Jeremiah Shingledecker jumped into the lead from the outside pole. Hall, who started sixth, was on the move taking third away from Ron Eperthener, Jr. on lap five. Three laps later, the Grove City, Pa. resident, did away with Scott Kay for second. On lap 12, Hall a winner in the DIRT Modified division this year, went to the inside of Shingledecker in turns three and four and slid on by for the lead and the win in his father’s Hall’s Safety Equipment #2. Shingledecker, Eperthener, and Gary Bollinger recorded season-best finishes in the second through fourth positions. John Buchanan was fifth. Marty Kristyak, Gary Smoker, and Scott Kay won the heat events over the season-high 28-car field.

Greenville, Pa.’s Gary Robinson won his second 15-lap Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stock Feature of the season. Bill Wheeling got the lead from a spinning Andy Buckley in the opening laps. Robinson, who started 11th, made his way to the front joining Mailliard as the two tracked down Wheeling for a three-car fight to the finish. Robinson got around Mailliard for second on lap 13 and was all over Wheeling, a former Sprint Car champion. On the final lap, Robinson got a run coming out of turns one and two and made the pass. Robinson held off Wheeling to the checkers in his Cresswell’s Auto Align/Speir Homes #44R. Mailliard was third. Brian Booher and Lynn Hostetler completed the top five with season-best finishes. Taking heat wins were John Reiser, Booher, Robinson, and Buckley in the 44-car field. Winning the two B mains were Albert Hays and Bill Banick, Jr.

Felmlee and Beltz Celebrate
Mercer Sprint and Mod Wins
by Mike Leone

May 29, 1999

Mercer (PA)...Highlighting wins on the fifth night of action were Bob Felmlee
(Waste Management Sprint Cars) and Rodney Beltz (Mercer.Pros.com DIRT
Modifieds). Other victors were Carl Weatherby (Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds), Rob Kristyak (Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds), and John Reiser (Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stocks). Bob Felmlee came out on top of the 20-lap Waste Management Sprint Car Feature. The Franklin, Pa. driver came from eighth to pass Mike Kekich on lap five for the lead. The driver of the World of Wheels/Lutz Auto Body Maxim #6 said in victory lane, "We were still a little too tight, but JamesWray (Sprint Car driver) was my one man crew and did a job."

The race got off to a scary start when Randy Johnson flipped violently down the frontstretch. He was okay. Buddy Cochran also got caught up in the melee. He was knocked unconscious and his throttle stuck sending him into a wild series of doughnuts which started in the infield and continued for a long period of time until the car finally came to rest on the backstretch. Luckily the car never hit anything. Cochran was taken to the hospital with a possible arm injury.

When action got underway, Mike Kekich stormed into the lead with Jason Jacoby trailing. On lap three, Felmlee was already making his move toward the front passing both Terry Young and Arnie Kent to move into third. One lap later, Felmlee edged Jacoby at the flagstand for runner-up. Then on lap five, Felmlee used the outside of turn four to make the winning move from Kekich. Point leader, Jimmy Hawley, who started 11th, was quickly making his presence known. Hawley got around Kent for third on lap eight and passed Kekich for second with a turn two pass on the outside. Hawley then began to run down Felmlee as the two worked traffic. But on lap 15, another scary incident took place. Hawley was within a couple car-lengths of Felmlee, but as Hawley entered turn two something came off the track striking him in the arm. Hawley was also taken to the hospital with a possible arm injury.

The remaining laps saw Felmlee pull away for his second win. A good battle ensued for second with Kent, Kekich, Jacoby, and Tommy Burns, Jr. all battling. Jacoby took Kekich for third on the restart, then passed Kent at the flagstand on lap 19 to finish a career-best second. Kent fell to third. Burns came from 19th to finish fourth after passing Kekich for the spot on lap 17. Jamie Smith was fifth. Sixth through tenth were Kekich, Young, Joe McEwen, Rick Anderson, and Mike Marano II. Heat winners were Young and Hawley.

Rodney Beltz of Ellwood City, Pa. won a wild 20-lap MercerPros.com DIRT Modified Feature for his first win of 1999. Beltz, who arrived late and missed his heat, started at the tail of the feature. "We just ended putting the motor in. We picked up the motor at 10:30 and were up all night and worked all day."

Guy Griffin and Jerry Bickel got out in front of the field at the start. Following a lap nine restart, Tommy Kristyak and Beltz passed Scott Rodgers for third and fourth. The following lap saw Kristyak pass Bickel for second. Beltz followed suit moving into third on the 11th circuit. Griffin, Kristyak, and Beltz began to pull away from the field by the half-way point. It was lap 13 when Kristyak took the lead from Griffin. Then following a restart with 15 laps completed, Griffin and Kristyak tangled. This gave the lead to Beltz and he was able to hang on for his first win of 1999 in his McElwain Chevrolet/KD Machine #6. Bickel passed Steve Young for second on lap 17 for a season-best finish. Griffin came all the way back to get third at the finish dropping Young to fourth. Carl Murdick was fifth. Completing the top ten were Rodgers, Howard Duff, Michigan’s Don Whitney, Todd Schaffer, and Bill Dorman. Winning the heats were Kristyak and Murdick.

Three-time defending track champion, Carl Weatherby, won his second 20-lap Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified Feature of the season. Jim Bickel assumed the early lead with a pass of Steve Barr on lap two. Lou Gentile and Weatherby drove by Barr for second and third on lap three. Bickel, Gentile, and Weatherby quickly began to distance themselves from the field. Weatherby used an outside move to pass Gentile on lap eight for second. Then on the ninth lap passed Bickel for the lead. On lap 10, Gentile disposed of Bickel for runner-up. Gentile re-passed Weatherby for the top spot on lap 12. But following a restart with 13 laps completed, Weatherby of Volant, Pa.reassumed the lead and never looked back for his 30th career Six-Cylinder win. Gentile was second. Frank Guidace was third after passing Bickel for the spot on lap 14. Randy Ferguson was fourth and dropped Bickel to fifth at the finish. Gentile and Weatherby were heat winners.
