Mercer Rained Out
for the Sixth Time

by Mike Leone

August 21, 1999

Mercer (PA)...For the third time in the past six weeks and for the sixth time this year, Mother Nature dumped on Mercer Raceway Park forcing the cancellation of racing Saturday evening. The cars were gathering, but late afternoon rain put an end to the next to last night of points.

Coming this Saturday will be the Dirt Cup Season Championships for the final night of points. In the Waste Management Sprint Cars, Jimmy Hawley of West Middlesex, Pa. has clinched his first Mercer title for John and Deb Crawford in their #cIII. Jamie Smith, Arnie Kent, and Mike Kekich are battling for second.

Hartford, Ohio legend, Lou Blaney, currently sits atop the MercerPros.com DIRT Modified point standings by 11 over Rock Hall. Carl Murdick, Steve Young, and Jerry Bickel are still alive for the title.

Volant, Pa.’s Carl Weatherby leads Randy Ferguson by 11 points as well in search of his fourth straight Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified crown. Lou Gentile and Frank Guidace still have a shot in third and fourth.

Second-year driver, Don McKnight of Jamestown, Pa., has a 30-point lead on Rick Hall and needs to finish 20th or better to become champion in the Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds.

Jamestown, Pa.’s Bill Hanna, the 1994 and 1995 Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stock Champion, has battled with Gary Robinson all year long and holds a 21-point advantage in search of his third title in the past six years.

Coming up on September 4 will be the first-ever appearance by the 305
Sprints. They will be joined on the card by the Six-Cylinder Modifieds,
West-Penn Limited Modifieds, and Pure Stocks. There will be no 410 Sprints or DIRT Modifieds due to the 19th Annual Sharon Nationals. September 11 will be a regular show featuring the Sprint Cars, DIRT Modifieds, Six-Cylinder Modifieds, West-Penn Limited Modifieds, and Pure Stocks. Also making an appearance will be the Zeresco P.C.T.C. Senior Series. Coming up on September 18 will be the final scheduled show. The Sprint Cars will be in action for 30 laps with $4,000 going to the winner plus lap money in the 3rd Annual Charlie Marsh Memorial. The DIRT Modifieds will be racing for $1,500 to-win, and the Pure Stocks will do battle for $500 to-win. There will also be a large fireworks display. Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults. Students 6-17 are $5 and children five and under are free. The family pass which admits two adults and up to four students is $23.

Hawley Wins $2,000 in Sprints, While Blaney Wins DIRT Mod Tour at Mercer

by Mike Leone

August 14, 1999

Mercer (PA)...Highlighting wins on a big night of racing Saturday evening at Mercer Raceway Park were Jimmy Hawley (Waste Management Sprint Cars) and Lou Blaney (MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds). Other winners were Lou Gentile (Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds), Rob Kristyak (Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds), and Brian Booher (Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stocks).

Jimmy Hawley of West Middlesex, Pa. was victorious in the 25-lap $2,000 Waste Management Sprint Car Feature for his sixth win. "There were a lot of good cars here. With Vicki (Emig) putting up this money and Tri-City (Speedway) tomorrow, hopefully all these guys will be there. It’s real competitive and great for the fans, and there are a lot of great race cars," said Hawley in victory lane.

Doug Kekich and Rob Eyler, two locals cars making their first appearances, made up the front row. Kekich took the early lead until the caution for Jack Sodeman, Jr., who spun with one lap completed. Kekich exited the race handing the lead to Eyler with Byron Reed and Arnie Kent directly behind. Hawley started the event from eighth and cracked the top five passing Brad Ellenberger on lap two. On lap three, Hawley disposed of Scott Priester for fourth, and the following lap moved into third passing Arnie Kent.

Eyler, who is a rookie Sprint Car driver after making the jump from the Micro Sprints, was doing a great job out in front. Lap traffic proved to be critical as the leaders caught the back-markers on lap seven. While Reed and Hawley were closing on Eyler, Reed got bogged down in traffic on the frontstretch allowing Hawley to edge by at the start-finish line for second. Smoke began to appear from Eyler’s car and Hawley made the winning pass on the backstretch driving by on lap eight. Reed got by Eyler the next lap for second and Troy Preston followed making the move on Eyler on the 12th circuit. Two cautions, one for Tommy Burns, Jr. and the other for Charlie Holben, with 17 and 18 laps completed were the only things that slowed Hawley. When the checkers waved, Hawley in the Dr. John and Debi Crawford owned #cIII had better than a straightaway margin over Reed, who made his first Mercer start of the season. "The track was real nice. It was easy to pass on. I’ve got to take my hat off to everyone on my crew. They work on it five or six days a week and know what to do to give me a great race car," said Hawley after his 19th win on the circuit.

Preston was third after starting ninth. Mark Keegan, who started 13th in his first Mercer start of the year, got around Eyler for fourth on lap 22 dropping Eyler to fifth. Priester, central Pa.’s Mike Wagner, Jamie Smith, and Brad Ellenberger completed the top ten. Heat winners were Burns, Gary McCann, Eyler, Reed, and Smith over the season-high 46-car field. South Central Ohio’s Jim Nier and Charlie Holben won the two B mains.

Lou Blaney of Hartford, Ohio came out on top of the 25-lap Bicknell Racing Products DIRT Modified Tour ‘99 race #5 for his first tour win of the season and fifth Mercer win of the season in the Colonial Metals/Troy-Alan Chevrolet/Carpenter’s Towing #10 . Blaney was somewhat somber in victory lane, "I really hit Scott (Gurdak) and he wrecked down there and I apologize for it. It kind of hurt my night." Guy Griffin jumped into the lead from the pole as Gurdak raced by Randy Myers for second. On lap two, following a restart, Blaney got into Gurdak sending him around and collected nine cars including Tim Engles, Dick Rankin, Bill Dorman, Joe Crawford, Lonny Riggs, Carl Murdick, Troy Schaffer, and Steve Barr. Brian Swartzlander then brought out the third caution with one lap completed when he spun his mount.

When racing finally settled down, Griffin reaffirmed his lead over Blaney, while Jeff Schaffer was now up to third from the 15th starting position. On lap 10 and 11, Blaney applied heavy pressure to Griffin. Gerry Bruce passed Schaffer for third on lap 11 and slowly reeled in the top two. In the meantime, Blaney got a great run off turn four on lap 12 to edge Griffin at the line, but the 1997 track champion was able to fend off Blaney to retake the lead on lap 13. Griffin’s demise came on lap 15 when running down the back-markers.

Josh Skarzenski spun just ahead of the leaders and Griffin had nowhere to go spinning his #11. This gave the lead to Blaney and he was able to lead the rest of the way for his 17th win on the circuit. Bruce had great run to finish second for his career-best Mercer finish. Schaffer was third. Jeff Hoffman passed Dean Pearson for fourth on lap 24 dropping Pearson to fifth at the finish. Sixth through tenth were Jerry Bickel, Griffin, Dorman, Swartzlander, and George Hobaugh. Heats went to Griffin, Bickel, and Riggs over the 34-car field. The two B mains went to Hoffman and Brian Fink.

Lou Gentile of Youngstown, Ohio returned to victory lane for the sixth time in the 20-lap Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified Feature. Gentile started sixth and was already up to second on lap one taking the spot from Mark McEwen. Jerry Schaffer led the first three laps before Gentile got by in turn two on lap four. Schaffer got into Gentile just after the pass and lost his front wheel. Under green flag racing, Jim Bickel lost two spots when Randy Ferguson and Carl Weatherby got by for second and third on lap seven. Weatherby, who started 16th, then got around Ferguson for second on lap 11 and got the caution he needed to bunch up the field with 18 laps completed. But on the restart, Gentile kept Weatherby, the current point leader, at bay for the win. Ferguson was third over Bickel. McEwen was a career-best fifth in just his ninth-ever start. Bickel and Weatherby won the heats.

Second-year driver Rob Kristyak won his third 20-lap Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modified Feature. Shon Derr led the first five laps before slipping off the backstretch on lap six and then made contact with Don McKnight sending Derr into a wild end-over-end flip. He was shaken, but okay. This gave the lead to Tom Mattocks with Marty Kristyak and Rob Kristyak trailing. Marty Kristyak broke with 11 laps completed moving Rob Kristyak into second. Rob Kristyak made the winning move on lap 16 nipping Mattocks at the line. The Bristolville, Ohio driver went on for the win in his Klaben Crown Ford #00. Mattocks held on to second over Rick Hall, Gary Smoker, and McKnight. Jeremiah Shingledecker, Ron Eperthener, Jr., and Rob Kristyak were heat victors over the 28-car field. Rick Ryder won the B main.

Brian Booher of Sandy Lake, Pa. closed out the night winning his second 15-lap Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stock Feature. Booher was handicapped to the pole and led all the way for his third career win in his Stake Specialty/R&R Auto Sale #2B. Bill Hanna came from seventh to pass Leigh Wheeler for second on lap 12. Hanna was on Booher in the last two laps, but fell short by about two car lengths. Wheeler, Booher’s teammate, was third over Brian Miller and Tim Mailliard. Taking heat wins were Willie Aley, John Reiser, Andy Buckley, and Booher over the 43-car field. Jeff Kravec and Gary Robinson won the two B mains.

Notes from the night...the 46-car Sprint Car field was the largest non-sanctioned car count since Mercer reopened in 1994...The $2,000 to-win, $200 to-start show was a late addition to the schedule after realizing Attica, K-C, Challenger, and Port Royal speedways were either shut down or not running 410 Sprints. With the success of the show, look for possible a few more in 2000...$12,565 was paid out to the 46 Sprints...Central Pa. drivers Jeff Weaver, Will Cramer, Mike Wagner, and Daryl Stimeling made their first appearances...Central Ohio drivers Marty Ling, Mark Keegan, Bob Thomas, Jim Nier, and Byron Reed made their first appearances...New York was represented by Phil Mott and Bob Cain, who also made their first starts...Wayne McPeek of Mineral Wells, West Virginia made his first-ever appearance...Local drivers making their first appearances included James Wray driving the Brent Covell #81, Scott Priester, Charlie Holben, Kevin Schaeffer, Roger Bennett, Rob Eyler, Gary and Sheila Rankin, Kevin Andrusky, Brad Ellenberger, Eric Smith, Bruce Powell, and Jim Bailey, who made his season-debut...Jason Jacoby was the only Sprint flip victim of the night as he flipped while leading the second B main...One hundred sixty-nine cars from five states were on hand making it the highest five-division car-count since Mercer reopened in 1994...Twenty-nine events were run over the course of the evening making the $10 adult general admission a real bargain...Many surrounding areas experienced heavy rain showers throughout the day and evening, while the speedway received only two showers and some drizzle as a cold front pushed through dropping the temperature to the low 60s at race time.

Kent Takes First-ever 410 Sprint Win,
While Doran Wins #2 in Mercer DIRT Mods

by Mike Leone

August 7, 1999

Mercer(PA)...Highlighting wins on the 13th night of racing of 1999 at Mercer Raceway Park on Saturday evening were Arnie Kent (Waste Management Sprint Cars) and Tim Doran (MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds). Other winners were Frank Guidace (Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds), Marty Kristyak (Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds), and Andy Buckley (Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stocks).

The last race it was former 360 Sprint driver Joe McEwen winning his first 410 race, this week it was former 360 Sprint driver Arnie Kent of New Castle, Pa. winning a long overdue first 410 Sprint Car Feature. "This is my 410. It’s a steel block. We’ve been having some trouble with it," said Kent.
"We’ll take it though and work on it tonight and go tomorrow (Sharon)," said a happy Kent.

Kent immediately took control from the pole position of the 20-lap Waste Management feature, while McEwen raced by Terry Young and Jason Jacoby on the opening lap for second. Fifth starter, Jamie Smith, was fast as he drove by Young, then Jacoby for third on lap two. Kent was already catching the
back-markers by lap four as all eyes were on Jimmy Hawley’s progression from the eight spot. The current point leader moved by Mike Kekich to crack the top five on lap five, then disposed of Jacoby for fourth on lap six.

Only two cautions slowed action which occured on laps eight and nine for Gary McCann and Rick Anderson respectively. When racing resumed, Kent, McEwen, Smith, and Hawley broke from the pack and put on quite a show in the remaining laps. Kent got some breathing room for a few laps as McEwen,
Smith, and Hawley were covered by a blanket battling for runner-up. On lap 13, Smith dove under McEwen for the spot. Kent got bogged down in traffic on the 16th lap allowing Smith to catch him. But Kent was able to hold on in his Dr. Martello Dentistry/McElwain Chevrolet #18. "I was upside down a
couple weeks ago. It’s a lot nicer to be here and it pays better," commented Kent form victory lane.

Smith settled for runner-up struggling to get by the lap car of Anderson in the closing laps. Hawley passed McEwen on the final lap for third dropping McEwen to fourth. Troy Preston came from 14th to place fifth in his brand new #1P. Sixth through tenth were Mark Murphy in his season debut, Jacoby, Rod Jones, Kekich, and Jack Sodeman, Jr. Heat winners were Jacoby, McCann, and Kekich over the 22-car field.

Tim Doran captured his second 20-lap MercerPros.com DIRT Modified Feature win. Earlier in the night, Doran’s dad predicted the win. "He’s pretty confident-more confident than I am. I think I could use more of that sometimes. He calls them sometimes," said the New Castle, Pa. driver.

Skip Moore led the first lap before third starting, Carl Murdick, took over the helm on lap two. Point leader Lou Blaney’s night came to an end going off on the hook on lap two. Another caution on the same lap took out Randy Snider and Tommy Kristyak. When racing resumed, Rodney Beltz and Rick Hall
passed Moore for second and third. On lap four, Beltz became the new leader when Murdick slipped high in turn four allowing Beltz to shoot by.

Doran was slowing working his way through the field from his 12th starting spot. Doran made a nice move to get around Moore and Bill Dorman for fourth on lap five. Beltz’s run came to an end on lap seven when his driveshaft broke giving the lead back to Murdick. Doran used the high-side to take second from Hall in turn four on lap 10. Running above the cushion, "Mr. Outside" drove by Murdick for the winning pass off turn two on the 11th circuit. Doran survived seven cautions for his second win in only his six appearance of the year in his Richard Smith Construction/Book & Book Well Drilling sponsored #12. "The car ran good and the guys in the crew had it set up good, and all the traffic seemed to go our way tonight. It was just a
lucky night I guess," relayed Doran from victory lane.

Steve Young gets the hard charge award of the night coming from 23rd to place second at the finish to retake the point lead. Young got second from Carl Murdick on lap 15 when Murdick got a bad restart. Hall, Dorman, and Jeff Schaffer all got by as well to complete the top five. Sixth through tenth were Murdick, Lonny Riggs, Rob McClimans, Moore, and Mark Sevin. Beltz, Schaffer, and Moore scored heat wins over the 25-car field.

Frank Guidace of Mercer, Pa. scored his third career win and first since June 27, 1998 in the 20-lap Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modified Feature. Guidace started third and passed Mark McEwen for second on lap two.

The winning move came on lap three taking the lead from veteran Conny Allen. Guidace went on for the near half-lap win in his Ace Paging/Alltel sponsored #99 over Gregg McCandless as only one caution slowed the event. McCandless came from sixth to take second from Allen on lap four. Carl Weatherby was third dropping Randy Ferguson to fourth for the fourth straight week. Jim Bickel completed the top five. Heats were won Lou Gentile and Weatherby. Marty Kristyak of Mercer, Pa. won the 14-lap rain-shortened Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modified Feature for his first win. Kristyak was
handicapped to the pole and led all the way for his first win since August 8, 1998 in his Kristyak’s Service Plaza #404. Teammate Gary Smoker came from 10th to pass Randy Rodemoyer for second on lap eight. Smoker ran down Kristyak in traffic and was all over him on lap 14, but a caution for Rob Kristyak slowed action just before the intensity of the rain picked up ending the event. Point leader Don McKnight raced from 11th to finish third passing Ron Eperthener, Jr. on lap 10. Eperthener dropped to fourth over Tom
Mattocks. Taking heat victories over the 28-car field were John Buchanan, Smoker, and Marty Kristyak.

After winning his first career event last time, Andy Buckley of Stoneboro, Pa. returned to victory lane making it two-in-a-row in the 15-lap Butterfield’s Pub Pure Stock Feature. Buckley started his trek to the front from eighth. On lap four he had already moved into fourth taking the spot from Pat Hile. By lap eight, Buckley ran down leader Brian Miller. On lap nine, Buckley went to the outside and got a run off turn four to pass Miller at the line. Gary Robinson made a late charge passing Bill Hanna for third on lap 12, then got Miller for second on lap 14. Robinson was on Buckley on the last lap, but Buckley moved Robinson up in turn four and crossed the line first in his #965. Miller got under Robinson for runner-up. Hanna was fourth ahead of Leigh Wheeler. Heat victors were Buckley, Hanna, and Robinson over the 30-car field. Willie Aley won the B main.

Sprints and DIRT Modifieds
to Highlight August 14 Mercer Show

By Mike Leone
August 4, 1999 For Immediate Release

Mercer(PA)...One of the biggest races of the season will take place Saturday, August 14 at Mercer Raceway Park. The Sprint Cars and DIRT Modifieds will headline the five-division program. The Waste Management Sprint Cars will be featured for 25 laps for $2,000 to-win with $200 going to the last-place car. A large turnout is expected as Attica Raceway Park, K-C Raceway, The Challenger Raceway, and Port Royal Speedway will not be running 410 sprints.

Jimmy Hawley is the current point leader with five wins. Bob Felmlee won three events before his serious accident at Tri-City Speedway. Jamie Smith, Troy Preston, and Joe McEwen have scored single wins. The MercerPros.com DIRT Modifieds will share the top billing as the Bicknell Racing Products Tour '99 makes its second annual stop to the tricky 3/8-mile egg-shaped oval. Western Pa. and eastern Ohio's best such as Lou Blaney, Brian Swartzlander, Tommy Kristyak, Jeff Hoffman, Tim Doran, Rex King, Kevin Bolland, Scott Gurdak, and many more will be on hand to do battle in the 25-lap feature. In the first four tour events, Weller was the Lernerville victor, while Lonny Riggs won his career-first DIRT Modified win at Hickory. King triumphed at Sharon and Swartzlander won at Tri-City.

The DIRT Modifieds have been very competitive thus far in 1999 as seven different drivers have claimed wins. Blaney has been victorious four times and is the current point leader despite missing two events. Kristyak and Bill Dorman are two-time winners. Kristyak was the big winner on July 3 winning the Bill Emig Memorial for $3,535. Single winners include Steve Young, Rick Hall, Rodney Beltz and Doran.

The top 12 cars from the Sprint and DIRT Modified heats will redraw for their feature positions. Also on the card will be the Miller Lite/Amsoil Six-Cylinder Modifieds, the Quaker Steak & Lube West-Penn Limited Modifieds, and the Butterfield's Pub Pure Stocks. The race will be a warm-up to the September 18 show when the Sprints will be in action for 30 laps for the Chuck Marsh Memorial with $4,000 to-win. The DIRT Modifieds will compete for $1,500 to-win and the Pure Stocks will go at it for $500 to-win.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m. Fans will get a real bargain as regular general admission prices will be in effect with adults $10, students 6-17 $5, and kids five and under free. For more information call 724-964-9300 during the week and 724-662-1310 on race day.
