2003 Living Legend
Living Legends are those that will forever be held in high respect by those that enjoyed their excellence. Think of our four past recipients, Buddy Cochran, Ralph Quarterson, Ed Schaffer, and Vic George, and I’m sure the memories they gave us all will immediately encompass your thoughts.
These people stand above the rest for their accomplishments, abilities, and the images they portray the moment you hear their names.
This year’s recipient is a patriarch of one of Mercer Raceway Park’s most well-known racing families- in fact, that may be how he received his famous nickname.
He started his career in 1962 and in just a short period of time became a champion in the six-cylinder modified division; he later followed that up with at least two additional championship seasons. His impressive career feature win total of 24 is based on known records between 1966 to the present, which included a career high of 7 in 1973.
This gentleman has graced the grounds of Mercer Raceway Park for over 42 years! Imagine the void that would be left in the history of The Park if all of this man’s contributions were never to have taken place.
To look back through the years and be able to revisit cherished memories from such an exciting past must be extremely satisfying; but to know you have been the most important part in molding the careers of both your son and son-in-law’s successful careers as they carry on the family tradition is probably more gratifying.
Look up the word icon in a dictionary and you will find the following description: one who is the object of great attention and respect.
I think you will all agree that this year’s recipient is truly deserving of this status at Mercer Raceway Park and we are very honored to present to him this year’s prestigious “Living Legend” Award.
Mr. Mike “Big Daddy” Kristyak, would you please come forward and receive the recognition and appreciation you truly deserve?
