2002 Living Legend Award

Living Legends are those that will forever be held in high respect by those that enjoyed their excellence.  Think of our three past recipients, Buddy Cochran, Ralph Quarterson, and Ed Schaffer, and I’m sure the memories they gave us all will immediately encompass your thoughts.

These people stand above the rest for their accomplishments, abilities, and the images they portray the moment you hear their names.

As an example, think of the following: Quarterson, Blaney, Kristyak, and Doran.  Only one name remains, which would complete the list of Mercer Raceway Park’s all-time top five modified winners.

The record books show that tonight’s Living Legend accumulated 29 victories dating back to 1968 and five modified track championships throughout the 70s along with two second place finishes in 1971 & 1973.  Domination best describes this competitor over that eight-year period!

If heart, soul, and desire could have been factors on the 50th anniversary night during 2001, it may have been possible that win #30 could have been recorded.

You see on that night, great memories were revisited as our recipient crawled into the cockpit of the familiar #65 King Brothers race car that joins us in the ballroom tonight.

What a sight it was as driver and car reunited for one last dance on the tricky 3/8-mile.

By now we’re sure you know whose name completes this impressive list.  It’s none other than this year’s Living Legend recipient- Aliquippa’s Vic George.
