Outstanding Achievement

These next awards have been put in place to recognize outstanding achievements or accomplishment throughout the past season.  Tonight three individuals will be receiving these awards.

Six years ago our third Outstanding Achievement Award winner was on top of his game.   He was the defending track champion at both Mercer & Tri-City Speedways and had just won his 100th career Sprint Car feature.  Less than 24 hours a scary crash at Tri-City all but seemingly ended his racing career.

In the following years there were whispers about his return and the rumors intensified last year during the off-season before finally being confirmed.  There were a lot of doubters that he said he couldn’t or shouldn’t come back.

Would he ever regain his form and prominence that he once had in western Pa and eastern Ohio?  He struggled on opening night and for a night maybe his critics had their day.  A 16th place finish was not what the Franklin racer was used to.  But I’m sure he’ll tell you where he finished that night didn’t matter, it was about getting comfortable and confident again.

The following week was a big improvement.  No he wasn’t ready to challenge for the win, but he was back in the top 10 again with a solid 7th.  A week later he inched closer to the front with 5th place run.

With his home track Tri-City opening in May, he was able to get more laps under his belt and the results continued to improve.  He slayed the dragon on May 29 at Tri-City with an emotional victory.  He carried the momentum over to the World of Outlaw show at Sharon on June 3 where he set fast time and qualified for the feature out of his heat to the delight of the locals.

The accolades were only beginning for Bob Felmlee.  His first Mercer win came on July 2 in a 25-lap special and one month later bagged another 25-lap special win on August 6.  With his confidence level rising, Bob closed out the month of August at Tri-City sweeping the final three races.

It was quite a season after a 6-year absence for our 1989 and 1998 champion, wouldn’t you agree?

Bob please come forward to accept your Outstanding Achievement Award that you’re so deserving of.
