2009 DEMOLITION DERBY RULES & REGULATIONS

 

Failure to abide by the following rules will result in disqualification.      

1.      All drivers must complete the annual registration agreement in its entirety before unloading their vehicles.

2.      All drivers must be at least 16 years of age.

3.      Absolutely no drugs or alcohol on the grounds.  Anyone found to be under the influence will be removed and may be turned over to the local and/or State Law Enforcement Officers and suspended from future events.

4.      All drivers must wear an approved helmet, eye protection, and seatbelt.  Safety gloves, neck collar, and knee pads are highly recommended.  No shorts, cut-offs, etc. permitted.  Helmet and seat belts must be on and fastened while in the car and on the track. 

5.      Good sportsmanship and professional behavior is expected of all drivers and crew members.  Failure to comply with this rule may lead to suspension from future events.

6.      There will be absolutely no profane signs or derogatory comments allowed on cars.  Anyone who does so will not be permitted to compete until it is removed.

7.      No pit crew member or spectator is allowed on the track at any time.                 

8.      Reruns will be at the discretion of the tech inspector. No flattened rear trunk area permitted.                                                                                                                                           

Type of Car: All American hardtop automobiles will be permitted. NO 1964-1966 Chrysler Imperials.  NO hearses, limos, station wagons, or 4x4 vehicles.             

 

Preparation of Car: 

1.      All windshields, headlights, taillights, and all additional glass must be removed before entering the grounds.

2.      All carpet, headliners, door panels, and back seats must be removed before entering the grounds.

3.      The driver’s door must be painted white for safety.

4.      Hood springs must be removed, but the hood hinges must remain intact.

5.      If the floor is rusted through on the driver’s side, it must be patched.

6.      All cars must have an on/off toggle or key switch.  No twisting of wires because this is not safe for a quick shut off.

7.      Radiator must remain in original position or it may be removed.

8.      Tires may be any size.  Wheel weights must be removed.  Studded snow tires are not permitted. No stem protectors or wheel supports of any kind.

9.      Body mounts may be removed and the body bolted solid.  No extra mounts will be allowed.  Body washers should be 3” in diameter by ¼” thick.  If the mount is rusted out it may be repaired, but repair the hole not strengthen the frame.

10.  Gas tank must be removed from original position.  A metal boat tank or other suitable metal tank should be securely mounted in the center of the floorboard behind the front seat and covered.

11.  Any size battery may be used.  The battery must be securely fastened to the floorboard and covered with a floor mat.

12.  Stacks through the hood are permitted.  If not used, you must cut two holes in the hood in case of fire.

13.  All cars must have an air filter.

14.  There must be at least one welded bar or pipe from the firewall to the roof in front of the driver.  It is also highly suggested to put a welded pipe on the driver side door if you are running a two-door car to create a door-post like on a four-door car.

15.  Car numbers must be painted on both sides of the car and an 18” x 18” UPRIGHT ROOF NUMBER.

16.  No roof signs with the exception of the car number.

17. Hoods and trunks must be left open until after inspection.

 

Welding: 

1.      Doors may be welded, wired, or chained shut. If wired, you should wire at least six places. If chained, you should chain in at least four places. If welded with strapping, it may not exceed 2" wide strap. Door welds vertical welds only, No welding of tops or bottoms of doors horizontally.

2.      If rust holes or tears are patched, the patch must be the same thickness as the original sheet metal.

3.      Rear ends may be welded or locked.

4.      Welding of bumper shocks and motor mounts is recommended. No wire, banding, or welding straps from bumper to core support.

5.      A pipe may be welded or bolted behind the front seat, not to exceed 3’ in diameter.  A pipe at the firewall, not to exceed 3’ in diameter, is also recommended.  Both front doors also may have a pipe not to exceed 3’ in diameter on them to create a box around the driver’s compartment.  Door pipe should connect to the fire wall pipe and the pipe you have behind the front seat.

6.      No welding of the frame except for welding bumper brackets to frame.  If the frame is torn or broken, the tear may be welded.  A tear may be welded not re-enforced.  A bend may be straightened not welded or re-enforced. Upper door window seal or lower seam may not be welded in any manner.

7.      No inner body seams may be welded or re-welded in anyway anywhere.  Inside of doors may not be welded or filled with cement.

 

Suspension:

1.      Front suspension must stay stock.  Rear must stay stock.  Example: A leaf spring car stays a leaf spring car.  A coil car stays a coil car.  Maximum five leaves with a 1” step.  Total thickness of leaf spring must be 3’ or less.

2.      All cars must have a working rear suspension with factory shocks (no homemade shocks).  Suspension travel should have at least 2’ of travel.

 

Wiring:

1.      Hoods may be wired in six places, sheet metal to sheet metal.  The hood may be bolted in four places, sheet metal to sheet metal, instead of wiring.

2.      If your car does not have leaf springs or is unibody, you may wire in four places, sheet metal to frame, on the rear only.

3.      Radiator support may be wired to the front bumper in two places.

4.      Trunk lids may be wired or banded in six places.

 

Illegal cars:

Cars determined to be illegal will be disqualified and entry fees forfeited.  All winning cars will be re-inspected prior to payoff if necessary.  This means even rolling the car over!  Just because it is not listed doesn’t mean it can be done.  Use common sense and good sportsmanship.  Don’t waste your time loading a car up!  All rules are under the discretion of the track with SAFETY FIRST in mind.

 

Procedures:

1.      Drivers must pay attention to the flagman and the red/green lights at all times.

2.      Drivers must run aggressive while the green light is on.  Cars cannot sit idle for an extended period of time or will be disqualified.  Drivers must stay in their cars with seat belts fastened until the demo derby is completed or until a red flag is displayed.

3.      Drivers must keep their car inside the marked off area of competition.  Cars that are out of bounds for an extended period of time will be disqualified.

4.      No hitting on driver’s door.  Repeated violations will cause car to be disqualified. 

5.      When the red flag is displayed, all action must come to a halt.  Any driver that does not quit hitting in a reasonable period of time will be disqualified.  Drivers who are no longer in competition may exit their cars at this time.

6.        Mercer Raceway Park reserves the right to determine the number of events, amount of cars in each event per night, and the designated payoff.

The rules and/or regulations set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events and to establish minimum acceptable requirements for such events.  These rules shall govern the condition of all events, and, by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have complied with these rules.  No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from the publication of or compliance with these rules and/or regulations.  They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official.

The race director shall be empowered to permit reasonable and appropriate deviation from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions that in his opinion do not alter the minimum acceptable requirements.  No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall results from such alterations of specifications.  Any interpretation or deviation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials.  Their decision is final.

On occasion when situations arise that are not covered by written rules, special rulings may be put into effect by the track officials.  Once such rulings are acted upon, they become an act of policy and will be added to the existing rules of procedures.
